Finally, I have covered a Christmas that really has something to with the true meaning of Christmas!
I was getting very frustrated in finding a song that was appropriate for my style of singing and held a deeper meaning than snow and jingle bells. I have a kind of ‘Dean Martin’ type voice that sounds better when I’m singing something slightly bluesy or jazzy, but I wanted to sing a real Christmas song, something that requires a purer, clearer type of singing. I can sing that way, but I can’t nail it in one take, it requires a lot more editing and not only do I not have those skills, I was running out of time – Christmas is almost upon us!
After trying half a dozen songs, I finally settled on Elvis’s ‘O Little O Bethlehem’ because it still had hints of black gospel in its track.
This was done very, very, quickly and I’m not sure it’s as good as White Christmas – but it’s one of my favorite Xmas songs and I had fun recording it.
“But you, Bethlehem, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Micah 5:2
